Swedish Hill Wins Two “Best of” Titles and Top Winner of Double Gold Medals at the NY Wine & Food Classic
August 14, 2013 – Romulus, NY Swedish Hill Winery announced that they were awarded “Best Medium Sweet Riesling,” “Best Hybrid Red Blend,” six Double Gold medals and three Gold medals, the highest Gold medal count of any winery at this week’s New York Wine & Food Classic.
The “Best Medium Sweet Riesling” was awarded to Swedish Hill’s 2012 Riesling, which also claimed it’s second Double Gold medal. The Viking Red won “Best Hybrid Red Blend” and a Double Gold medal, adding to its accolades of two Gold medals at previous competitions.
Out of the total 54 Double Gold medals that were awarded at this year’s competition, Swedish Hill won the most with six for a variety of wines including their sparkling Blanc de Blanc, 2012 Dry Riesling, Blue Waters Riesling, and their 2012 Marechal Foch. Double Gold medals require unanimity among a panel’s judges that a wine deserves a Gold medal, whereas Gold medals require a majority vote, which Swedish Hill managed to do for an additional four wines.
The four Gold medals for Swedish Hill were awarded to the 2012 Blue Waters Chardonnay Riesling, 2012 Cayuga White, Classic Concord, and Classic Catawba. For the 2012 Blue Waters Chardonnay Riesling and the Classic Concord, this is their second Gold medal. The 2012 Cayuga White now has a total of three gold medals and the Classic Catawba had also won a “Best of Class” award from the Long Beach Grand Cru.
“With the continuing explosion in quality of New York wines, we are honored to have received so many top awards,” remarked Owner, Dave Peterson, after the announcement of winnings. “We are also proud to have wines of numerous styles and price points recognized. This reflects our drive to consistently produce a variety of quality wines that reach a wide range of wine consumers with each vintage.”
The New York Wine & Food Classic is the most anticipated and often referred to as the “Oscars” of competitions for the 337 New York State Wineries that are encouraged to enter. It is judged by 22 expert judges from across the globe, who altogether evaluated 842 wines at this year’s event. It is at this event that Swedish Hill claimed its three Governor’s Cups in 1994, 2008, and 2010.
So far Swedish Hill Winery has claimed 45 “Best of”, Double Gold, and Gold medals and awards in 2013 along with the “Top Winery” award from the NYS Fair Wine Competition this month, maintaining its status as one of the Finger Lake’s most award-winning wineries.
